The Intendant spoke: “Your mind is strong. You have resisted our efforts well. You should be very proud. Truly.”
Zira shivered as lucidity flowed again.
“You can continue to fight all you wish,” the Intendant continued, “but the probes will work. They always work.”
Zira could not see the Intendant. But she felt her presence in the darkened chamber. In that room, she felt more evil than in all her life.
“Where is my son?” asked Zira in a low, quivering voice.
The Intendant smiled. It was a smile that pierced the darkness and cut Zira to her very core.
